Winter Birds
One of my 2021 pandemic projects was photographing the winter birds at refuges around the Bay Area. The refuges all part of the Pacific Flyway and were created to help migratory birds after 90% of the natural Central valley wetlands were lost to agriculture. Most refuges are within a couple of hours travel from San Francisco.
Seeing great congregations of birds and hearing them is an unforgettable experience. Sand Hill cranes, a species that has been around for over 2 million years has a haunting call. Marin Living Magazine featured a photo of them on their cover as well as other shots from my project in their August 2021 issue.
